HOW IT WORKS

What is FortNox Drop?

A one-time encrypted transfer tool. Send a message or file to one person. The link works once — when the receiver opens it, the session ends. Nothing is stored anywhere.

How the encryption works

The encryption key is in the URL fragment — the part after #. URL fragments are never sent to any server, including ours. Messages are AES-256-GCM encrypted before upload; files transfer peer-to-peer. Your plaintext never leaves your device.

Send a message

  • Write your message in the Message tab
  • Click Create Drop Link — message is encrypted and stored for up to 24 hours
  • Copy the link and send it to the recipient — any channel works
  • You can close the tab immediately — the link stays valid
  • The recipient opens the link — message decrypts in their browser and is deleted from the server

Send a file

  • Switch to the File tab
  • Pick any file — it's encrypted before leaving your device
  • Create Drop Link → share with recipient
  • Both tabs must stay open during the transfer (peer-to-peer)

Smart receive buttons

When the receiver gets a message, FortNox Drop recognizes what it contains and shows the right action button automatically:

  • Encrypted vault → Open in FortNox Vault
  • Signed message → Verify in FortNox ID
  • Plain message → Save as Vault note

One-time only

Messages: the link works once. When the recipient reads it, it is deleted from the server immediately. After 24 hours, unread drops expire automatically. Files: link stops working when the sender closes the tab. No replay, no history, no log.

Zero-knowledge: Key stays in the URL fragment — never reaches any server. Messages stored encrypted for 24h; files transfer peer-to-peer. How does this work? →
